Scarborough resident Joan Jagolinzer was honored as the Outstanding Outreach and Service Volunteer at AARP Maine’s annual volunteer recognition awards ceremony and luncheon. The ceremony, which was held at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, recognizes AARP volunteers and their community partners for exceptional service to older Mainers throughout the year.

Joan started volunteering for AARP when she was still working for the local IRS office, as a way to put her directly in touch with people she could help. She quickly became a regional coordinator for the Tax Aide program, and then two years ago, became the state coordinator.

The Tax Aide program is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service. The program serves low- and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Under Jagolinzer’s leadership, the number of sites, volunteers and Maine citizens served has increased. Last year, Maine Tax Aide served more than 11,000 Mainers with its service – operating at 75 sites with 150 motivated volunteers. Each year, the program saves its clients millions of dollars in tax income – which they can spend on other essential services.
