The free services offered at every Women, Work and Community office in Maine, including the facility in South Portland, include:
• The Basics of Starting a Business. This introductory workshop covers the basics of the business plan, marketing and business financials. Over three sessions, this nine-hour workshop operates in partnership with the Women’s Business Center at Coastal Enterprises Inc.
• New Ventures Entrepreneurship Training. With the goal of creating a solid business plan in mind, this 10- to 14-week program is approved under the Unemployment Insurance Commission. Graduates are eligible to apply for three academic credits from the University of Maine at Augusta.
• Steps to Economic Security. Developed for experienced business owners, this five-session workshop enables women to plan for growth and personal economic security. Individual and group follow-up is also available.
• Self-employment Assistance. One-on-one business assistance, available to welfare recipients referred to Women, Work and Community, offers business assessment and ongoing, monthly coaching intended to guide women toward economic self-sufficiency and business success.
• Information and referral. Provides a host of contact information regarding other statewide services related to self-employment and business assistance.
