The Windham Economic Development Corporation and Windham Adult Education are teaming up to offer residents help in the increasingly difficult search for employment.
The groups will hold a workshop at the Windham Public Library, 217 Windham Center Road, on Thursday, May 14, 3-5 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to assess their current knowledge and skills and put the language in the form of a resume, take home samples of resumes, cover letters and thank you notes, and learn job search strategies including networking, direct employer contact and Internet searches. To register, please call 892-1908. For more information, call Windham Adult Education at 892-1819.
There will also be assistance available at the library during scheduled times. The next sessions will be Tuesday, May 12, 2-4 p.m.; Wednesday, May 13, 6-8 p.m.; Monday, May 18, 6-8 p.m.; and Wednesday, May 20, 10 a.m.-noon.
Windham Economic Development Director Tom Bartell said many people who are now looking for employment have not had to go through the process in many years, and they may need help getting up to speed on current methods. The change is something he himself noticed when he applied for the economic development position after over a decade at another job.
“The way you look for a job now is way different than it was back then, that’s for sure,” Bartell said.
Tom Nash, director of Windham Adult Education, said the partnership will help show residents that his department can be the go-to place for career help, and an important piece of the economic development puzzle. After getting help access their skills at a workshop, residents can then go to Adult Education to augment those skills, he said.
Town Councilor John MacKinnon said the workshops show the broad impact economic development can have in a community.
“It’s more than just bringing business to town. It’s helping people here,” he said.
