As a lifelong resident of Scarborough, I will be voting against the proposed zoning change that seeks to pave the way for a racino at Scarborough Downs.
Scarborough is wealthy town, in terms of our human, financial and natural resources. We do not need to resort to gambling receipts to make our town into the vibrant and livable community that we all want. On the contrary, having slot machines in town would damage Scarborough’s small-town feel and make it a less appealing home for families who are the backbone of our community.
I also categorically reject the notion that our region’s farmers are relying on the racino to “save” them. This is part of the larger pro-slots PR campaign and simply not true. Maine’s small farm sector is growing faster than the national average without the help of gambling. If you want to support local agriculture, vote with your fork by buying Maine-grown food.
