The colder months are drawing to a close, and with them the cold-weather sports: basketball, ice hockey, wrestling, swimming, indoor track, skiing and competitive cheerleading. And once again, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough high schools can all boast of solid seasons.

South Portland girls basketball finished No. 3 in the regular season and reached the postseason quarters, where they fell to Cheverus 61-42 for a final record of 16-4. The boys – last year’s A West champs – faced a rebuilding year in 2013-2014, graduation having devastated their starting lineup. They finished 6-12, just outside the playoffs, but should return to contention next year.

Red Riots ice hockey compiled an 11-7 record, good enough for eighth place and a trip into the playoff quarters as well. There, however, they squared off against No. 1 Falmouth, and went home.

In the pool, Nick Alvarez took seventh in both the 200-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Butterfly at States, Colin Harle took ninth in the 100-yard Freestyle and the 400-yd Freestyle Relay team of Alvarez, Harle, JT Fix and Thomas Richards took seventh.

On the track, the South Portland boys took second at States overall. The 800-meter Relay team of Ben Michaud, Michael Cueesta, Luchmoch Bol and Jordan Susi finished fourth, as did the 1,600-meter Relay team of Gavin-Damian Loring, Bryan Currie, Jacob Maloney and Jonathan Bagley. Duncan Preston, Ben Michaud and Michael Cuesta went one-two-three in the long jump, and merely jumbled that order up – Cuesta first, Preston second and Michaud third – in the triple jump. Preston, quite adept at throwing a football, also proved powerful behind a shot, taking fourth in the put.

For the girls, Lauren Magnuson ran strong, taking fourth in the 200-meter and third in the 55-meter. Shannon Conley placed fourth in the 800-meter and third in the mile, while Callie O’Brien finished third in the high jump. The Red Riots took fourth in both the 4×200-meter and 4×800-meter relays.

Cape Elizabeth

The No. 5 Cape boys b-ballers reached the playoff quarters, where they fell to Yarmouth by just two points to finish their season 11-8. The girls closed their year outside the playoffs, but at a respectable .500, 9-9.

The Capers’ hockey squads both reached the postseason this year; the boys at No. 6 dropped out in the quarters, where they faced Greely, finishing their 2013-2014 at 7-11-1. The No. 4 girls advanced to the semis, but there ran into eventual state champs Scarborough and closed the year 11-9.

Cape showed their stuff on the track, too. The girls took fifth at WMCs and the boys took third; come States, the girls finished seventh while the boys tied for fifth with Fryeburg and North Yarmouth Academy (Waterville repeated in first.) The girls 4×800-meter Relay team of Hailey Petsinger, Samantha Feenstra, Hayley Doss and Eva Brydson took third, and Petsinger and Brydson went two-three in the 800-meter. Similarly, the boys 4×800-meter Relay team – Mitchell Morris, Kyle Kennedy, Will Britton and Liam Simpson – also placed third, and Simpson and Morrison went two-three in the two-mile run. Deven Roberts landed third in the high jump (tied with Drew Nealy of Belfast.)

Both the boys and girls Nordic skiers finished middle-of-the-pack at States; the alpine girls, however, took first. Sophie Hewitt, Emma Landes, and Emma Dvorozniak went three-four-five in the giant slalom, and Caroline Paclat, Kinnon McGrath and Sarah Paclat went seven-eight-nine.

Scarborough

The Scarborough sports machine rolled on this winter as well. The girls and boys basketball teams finished their regular seasons in ninth (at 7-11) and 10th (at 9-9) respectively – plenty good enough for postseason play. Both were eliminated in the prelims, however, the girls falling to Deering and the boys to Cheverus.

In the pool, Kyle Ankermann took fifth at States in the 50-yard Freestyle, and Nate Erickson took fifth in 1-meter diving.

The boys hockey team sat atop A West for most of the season. Late, however, rivals Falmouth took over the No. 1 seed, and the pair met one final time in the regional finals. Falmouth emerged triumphant that night (and went on to take the State crown.)

The girls hockey team, on the other hand, went all the way – they capped a perfect season with a Class A State crown.

Likewise, the Red Storm boys swept onto the track, taking first at States by a nearly 50-percent margin over No. 2 Cheverus (91.33 points to 62). Colin James took third in the 800-meter, Jacob Bloom fourth in the mile and Jacob Terry first in the 2-mile. Cameron Langlois earned second in the 55-meter hurdles and ran alongside Austin Doody, Jerry Kenney and Max Ornstein on the first-place 4×200-meter Relay team. Terry, Lucas Foerster, Will Fowler, and Alex Karam comprised the first-place 4×800-meter Relay squad. Sam Rusak (just a freshman) and Edward James went three-four in the pole vault and Mike Pino took first in the shot put. On the girls’ side, Aly Atherton took third in the 400-meter, Sarah Rinaldi second in high-jump and Cailley Ledue third in pole vault.
