I have two daughters, ages 6 and 7, who love the library and think it’s a special treat to go. They play with the puzzles in “The Pit,” listen to stories at story time, go to “Pajamarama,” and attend many of the special programs offered by the library.
They love books, and my husband and I enjoy reading to them, especially new ones that we haven’t read a hundred times before! Their arms are loaded when we check out books. You’d think they were in a candy store. It is great that there are no limits at checkout, but that is not a problem because we always manage to read every one of them.
The only reservation I have is that I don’t always feel comfortable with them in the children’s section. Its close proximity to the adult area makes me feel as though my girls are distracting those who are reading. Not that they are out of control but, they are 6 and 7, so we generally don’t stay too long.
After viewing the library plans, I believe a library expansion would definitely benefit everyone. The children’s area is spacious and separated from the adult spaces, allowing for a more relaxing and enjoyable experience for all. Another great space on the plans is the reading room with a fireplace. I know I’ll be going more often without the kids to enjoy that!
Some of my fondest childhood memories were of the library in the small town in New Jersey where I grew up. My immigrant parents worked 12 hours per day six days a week, which didn’t leave much extra-curricular time. While they were pursuing the American Dream, I went to the library everyday during summer vacation.
As I got older, I asked my parents to take me to work with them because there was a new library close to them. I remember the first time I walked into the larger library and thinking how magical and beautiful it was. I would get lost for hours. There’s something very calming about libraries. I think some of my daughters’ fondest childhood memories will be of visiting the Scarborough Library.
I am in support of the proposed library expansion and urge you to vote in favor of it on June 13.
