The oft-written-about, abandoned mill in South Windham – where in 2005 vandalism reigns – once was a thriving pulp mill providing employment to most of the families who lived nearby. Owners of the mill built many houses on High Street for mill workers, painting them all red, giving the name “Red City” to this neighborhood. This old postcard photo shows what the mill looked like, before falling into ruin. The old mill will be torn down by the developer who will then build much-needed housing including a segment for senior citizens. Photo courtesy of the Windham Historical Society
