On Saturday, May 21, watch for the American flags to be placed on utility poles on the major highways in town, and on every veteran’s grave in every cemetery in Windham – recognizing those who served, beginning with the Revolutionary War! Naturalization ceremony
On Friday, May 27, at 10 a.m., the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 148 will host a Naturalization Ceremony at the Windham Veterans Center. This event supports the Auxiliary mission through the education of citizens and mentoring of youth, and promoting patriotism, and good citizenship. Guest speakers include Sen. Susan Collins and Ret. Col Bob Akins, USMC. The public is invited.
Memorial Day
Memorial Day weekend begins on Saturday, May 28 with an all-day food drive by the American Legion at Walmart, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. From 8-10 a.m. at the high school, Toby’s Memorial 5K run will be held. On Monday, the parade assembles at 8:30 a.m., and at 10 a.m. at the high school, the ceremony begins. The American Legion Field- Allen Post 148 extends an open invitation for groups and individuals who may wish to be in the Memorial Day parade to contact Post Adjutant Dave Tanguy, 892-3106, for more info or to make arrangements to join the parade.
The American Legion holds a special ceremony on Memorial Day. Following is a list of local veterans who have passed away since May 2015 who will be recognized on Memorial Day with a bell-tolling ceremony. Veterans Open House
At noon on Memorial Day, Windham Veterans Center holds the annual Open House and picnic, with a special 1 p.m. dedication of the Vietnam War 50th anniversary pavers followed by a 1:30 dedication of veterans’ commemorative pavers. All are welcome for this special event.

“You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” will be presented from May 20-29 at Windham Center Stage Theatre, 7 p.m. Friday and Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays, at the town hall stage. Bluegrass at church
On Saturday, May 28, Joe K. Walsh & Sweet Loam, bluegrass band, will be presented by Music with a Mission, 7 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church, Route 302, North Windham. Cancer Support Group
Windham Cancer Support Group will meet one week earlier this month due to the holiday. This is a special meeting for caregivers only and will be held Monday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. This meeting is to let caregivers express themselves without their loved ones present for fear of saying something hurtful and for widowers who may need to vent. All representatives of our group have had these experiences! The meeting is at Windham Public Library.
Seniors need help
Virginia Billings, who has for such a long time, managed the Senior Meal Site at Unity Gardens on Route 115, needs some help. She needs someone to help put up Meals on Wheels on Thursdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. This person will work with another person. For information, give her a call at 892-3891. The Senior Meal Site is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Find out about how they help area seniors!
Borrow a telescope
Thanks to a grant from the Cornerstones of Science Foundation, the library has a telescope to lend out to patrons for one week at a time. The Orion StarBlast 4.5″ telescope comes with instructions, and its small size makes it easy to transport. Borrowers must be at least 18, have a Windham Public Library card and a valid driving license (or other identification). There is no charge to borrow the item.
