Maine Beer Co. in Freeport plans a major expansion of its facility at 525 U.S. Route 1, and will present a conceptual site plan to the Project Review Board on Aug. 10 at 6 p.m.
Owners Daniel and Dave Kleban want to expand from 30 to 125 parking spaces, and enlarge the building from 6,000 to 20,330 square feet.
The Klebans, who opened the Freeport brewery and tasting room in 2013, have enjoyed success not only with the tasting room, but also with outside sales of its craft beers and events in Maine Beer’s parking lot.
“This is one of the great success stories from Freeport in my time here,” Keith McBride, chairman of the Freeport Economic Development Corp., said Monday.
He said the Klebans have “an extremely popular product” with a national reputation for high quality.
“They have a lot of people from away going in to try their product,” McBride said. “I saw tons of out-of-state plates there the other day.”
Several attempts to reach the Klebans for comment proved unsuccessful.
Donna Larson, town planner and staffer for the Project Review Board, said Monday that she hasn’t gone through Maine Beer’s conceptual site plan thoroughly, but at this point sees no isssues with the application.
“This is a major expansion,” Larson said. “This is great.”
The company was founded by the brothers in 2009 and was previously run in Portland on Industrial Way, an industrial park off Riverside Street.
When the firm moved to Freeport in 2013, Daniel Kleban said the new space, which more than doubled its Portland space, would allow Maine Beer Co. to expand its output from 3,000 barrels per year to 5,000 barrels.
The Klebans have earned a reputation as good stewards of the environment at their facility. A solar array on the roof and earth solar trackers on the ground combine to offset a great deal of the brewery’s electricity consumption.
The brothers, Michigan natives, began the company because of their love for craft beer and home brewing.
“We just liked craft beer and thought it would be a fun industry to get involved in. We tried to fill a niche by making American style, very hoppy beers,” Daniel Kleban, who lives in North Yarmouth, said when they first opened in Freeport.

Owners Dan and Dave Kleban plan a major expansion at Maine Beer Co. in Freeport.

Maine Beer Co.’s Daniel Kleban and his brother seek to more than double the size of their Freeport facility. They have “an extremely popular product,” said Keith McBride of the Freeport Economic Development Corp.
