An early-morning crash near a road construction site in Durham claimed the lives of two men and injured two others Wednesday, including a member of Durham Public Works. The pickup truck caught fire after the vehicle exited Rabbit Road onto Route 9 and crashed into a public works dump truck. Passersby pulled the three men from the pickup, police said.
Malakai Cawood, 21, of Limington, and Brendon Harthorn, 24, of Cornish, died in the crash, police said. Jeremy Reardon, 35, of Buxton, was taken by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center of Lewiston for treatment of multiple injuries, police said. The three men, working for Plowman Constructon of Gorham, were headed to a job site, police said.
Clifton Larrabee, 42, of Durham, who works for Durham Public Works, is being treated for unspecified injuries at Maine Medical Center in Portland. The Durham crew has been doing road construction work on Rabbit Road and Runarond Pond Road, on the other side of Route 9.
Route 9 was to reopened to traffic in mid-afternoon, police said.
