Freeport voters went big for Democrat Hillary Clinton over Republican Donald Trump, 3,442-1,644, in Tuesday’s election.

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson was backed by 265 voters, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein had 86 votes.

In local races, Earle Rowe and incumbent Thomas Hudak emerged victorious in a tight three-way contest for two positions with the Freeport Sewer District Board of Trustees in Tuesday’s elections, held at Freeport High School.

Rowe, who for many years harvested clams on Freeport’s mud flats, led with 2,352 votes. Hudak, the Sewer District board treasurer, garnered 2,191 votes and Tim Whitacre, a consultant and former board member, trailed with 2,020 votes.

There were 315 write-in votes to replace Michael Ashby on the Freeport Water District Board of Trustees, but no declared winner. Town Clerk Chris Wolfe said early Wednesday morning she will do a spreadsheet to tally votes from the four counting teams to see who won. Results will be final “in a day,” Wolfe said.

Freeport voters passed two amendments to the town charter, both dealing with the circulation of petitions. The first, which brings the town in line with state law, stipulates that residents would no longer have to go to the town clerk to sign petitions and petitions could be circulated around town. That amendment passed handily, 4,368-718.

The second town charter amendment also passed with ease, 3,425-966. The change eliminates a provision that prohibits residents from signing more than one nominating petition for each elected office.

New town councilors and Regional School Unit 5 directors elected Tuesday had no opposition.

On the Town Council, John Egan will succeed James Hendricks for an at-large seat. Egan won 4,345 votes, and there were 50 write-ins. Incumbent District 3 Councilor D. Scott Gleeson got 1,049 votes, with 14 write-ins. Peter Anzuini will fill the remaining year on the term of Kristina Egan, who resigned her Disrict 1 seat last summer. Anzuini had 1,002 votes, with 13 write-ins.

Valy Steverlynck remains on the RSU 5 Board of Directors, while Sarah Skillin Woodard is a new member, succeeding Louise Brogan. Steverlynck won 3,089 votes, Woodard 3,817 with 52 write-in votes.
