Post-Halloween thank you
Windham Parks & Recreation says a big “thanks” to everyone – prize donors, volunteers and families –who helped make the new Halloween Adventure such a success. Sponsors who donated prizes were: Microtel Inn & Suites, Summit Adventures, Smitty’s Cinema and Advanced Dental Concepts. Volunteers included: Windham High School Key Club, St. Joseph’s College and the Windham Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee. A number of local families and TLC Realty put together the fun and creative trunks for Trunk or Treat. Also, a big thanks to everyone who donated a total of 269 items to the Windham Food Pantry. The event wouldn’t have been possible without so much community support.

Don’t miss ‘Kiss Me, Kate’

Windham High School’s fall musical, “Kiss Me, Kate,” premieres tonight, Nov. 11, at the Windham Performing Arts Center at the school. The Cole Porter and Tony Award-winning show stars Will Wheaton and Ellie Joseph, who play Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi.

“Kiss Me, Kate” is the story of a troupe of traveling actors who are performing Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” but things get complicated when the backstage drama of their personal lives creeps into the action. As they try to stage the musical, sparks fly on and off stage between Graham, the show’s director and star, and Vanessi, his leading lady – and ex-wife. Add to the mix passionate young lovers, ingénue Lois Lane and her gambler boyfriend Bill, plus a few musically inclined gangsters’ heavies, and the result is a sharp and witty night with some of Cole Porter’s most immortal tunes, including “Why Can’t You Behave,” “So In Love Am I” and “I Hate Men.”

Showtimes at the Windham Performing Arts Center at Windham High School will be held Nov. 11-13 and Nov. 18-20 at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $12 for adults; $8 for children, students and seniors. For reservations, call 893-1742 or email [email protected].

Veterans Day in Windham
A Veterans Day ceremony and open house, hosted by the Windham Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10643, will be held at the Windham Veterans Center on Friday, Nov.11, at 11 a.m. The public is invited and refreshments will be provided. The keynote speaker will be Korean War veteran and local resident Jerry Black. The Windham Chamber Singers will performing patriotic songs. The winners of this year’s VFW sponsored essay competitions will be introduced and will read their essays. Boy Scout Troop 805 will assist with the program. After, there will be a dedication of Veterans’ Pavers in the Memorial Garden. The Windham Veterans Center is located at 35 Veterans Memorial Drive. Turn right just before Friendly’s Restaurant and follow Memorial Drive to the end.

Community Thanksgiving dinner
Food and Fellowship Inc. offers its annual Monday Meal Thanksgiving Dinner, free for the community, at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, at the North Windham Union Church. Questions? Call 415-9742 or 892-9212.

Thrift Shop open
The North Windham Union Church, UCC thrift shop will be open during the holiday fair on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Bargains include jackets, coats, scarves, hats, mittens and gloves. Fishing and hunting clothing is available in large and extra large sizes. Stop in and check out the shop’s household goods, clothing, children’s clothing and toys and other treasures.

Black Brook Walk
On Sunday, Nov. 13, explore the 100-acre Black Brook Preserve. The two-mile fall walk on mostly flat terrain begins at 10 a.m., with Dennis Hawkes as guide. It will last about two hours. The event is free, but space is limited, so an RSVP required. Call Toby at 844-0114.

Annual Book Sale (and a sneak peek)

The annual and popular Friends of the Windham Public Library Book and Bake Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19. Proceeds go to the Friends of WPL, and consequently benefit the library. Although still going by the traditional title of “Book Sale,” folks will also find movies, audiobooks and music on hand. All ages and most genres are represented. The “Bake Sale” items are an assortment of homemade goodies, baked and donated by local volunteers – and they go fast! The sale takes place in the library.

A special Friday night preview fundraiser will be held from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. For $10 per person entering the door, folks can get first peek-and-purchase of the Book Sale items.

Bean supper
The American Legion will serve up a baked bean supper from 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. The menu includes homemade pies, salads, rolls, hot dogs and a variety of beans. The cost is $8; under 12, free. Proceeds help fund Legion projects in the community.

Warm feet for homeless vets
Marine Corps League Detachment 1324 is collecting new or gently used socks, gloves, hats, coats and winter-wear for shelters and agencies that help homeless veterans and their families in southern Maine. American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 members visited the Maine Military Museum in South Portland on Nov 1. The visit was sponsored by the Post’s Vietnam 50th Anniversary Comm.
