Nordic adventure

Partnering with Maine Huts and Trails, the Standish recreation department is offering a Nordic and/or snowshoe adventure on groomed trails in the western mountains to Poplar Ridge Jan. 14-15. Novices are welcome, equipment can be made available to you if you don’t have your own. The trail to the hut is approximately 3.2 miles and has great views of the Bigelow Mountain Range. Once at the lodge, participants will enjoy locally sourced, homemade food, hot showers, radiant heat, a drying room and other comforts. Wine and local brews will be available for purchase. Accommodations are in shared bunkrooms. Limited, double-occupancy private rooms may be available. The cost is $144 per person for the bunkrooms and $164 for the private rooms. The price includes transportation, accommodations and three meals –dinner and breakfast and a bag lunch for trailside on Sunday. Departure and return will at the Mason-Motz parking lot, with times to be announced. St. Joe’s scholarship

If you’re applying for Fall 2017 admission to Saint Joseph’s College, visit the campus in Standish before May 1, 2017, and receive a $1,500 Visit Scholarship. At the Steep Falls Library

Shopping Night with Local Artisans, Friday, Dec. 16, 5-8 p.m. – Jewelry, handknit goods, pottery, honey, home-canned jams and pickles, handcrafted gifts, photography and more will be available. Also, there will be free gift wrapping if you help fill the pet pantry with a donation of pet food.

Monthly Book Group, Monday, Dec. 18 – “Hillbilly Elergy” by J.C.Vance

Cross country skiing and snowshoeing enthusiasts taking part in an outdoor adventure trip co-sponsored by the town’s recreation department will stay at this Poplar Ridge lodge, operated by Maine Huts and Trails.
