Early reaction from citizens regarding the Scarborough Downs TIF proposal has been less than enthusiastic because citizens are suspicious about the fast pace at which the town is trying to ram this through.

At the TIF workshop with the Town Council last Wednesday, Rocco Risbara highlighted the long history his family has in the town. Risbara is a well-known local developer with a good reputation. That reputation could change very quickly if the current path the proposed TIF is taking does not slow down.

The Downs project could be hugely successful if the developers gain the support of the citizens of Scarborough. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the town’s residents excited about this project and anxious to hear about its progress, rather than bad-mouthing it for years to come?

A plea to the Risbara and Michaud brothers: Please hold off moving forward with the TIF proposal until after the November council elections. We have some bright, level-headed, “pro-Town Center” candidates in the lineup.

A project that is the largest this town has ever seen and that will affect a generation of citizens deserves a careful, thoughtful and deliberate process that can be supported by the people who will be contributing to it. Please do the right thing and slow this process down.
