SANFORD — The Sanford Mainers (17-17) fell behind early to the Plymouth Pilgrims (16-18) on defensive miscues and ineffective pitching before a comeback attempt failed late in the game in a 7-5 loss Thursday night at Goodall Park.
Plymouth jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead after three complete innings fueled by a pair of Sanford defensive miscues and a two-run home run by Joe Frieday (Virginia Tech University) broke the game open. Sanford’s offense finally came around from the fourth to the seventh.
Outscoring the Pilgrims 5-2 in that span, the Mainers were able to make it a 7-5 deficit after scoring a pair of runs in the fourth, one run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
However, in the ninth, a Harrison Wenson lead-off single was erased by a double play and the Mainers went down in order to end the game. The loss was the fourth straight for the Sanford club.
