SPRINGVALE — A $672,000 grant from the federal Department of Veterans Affairs will expand capacity at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery.

The grant was announced earlier this month by U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King. The senators said the grant will fund construction of 255 preplaced crypts, landscaping, irrigation and supporting infrastructure.

The veterans cemetery opened in August 2010 after nearly a decade of planning and construction, and is located at 83 Stanley Road.

Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery System superintendent Dave Richmond said construction for the double-depth crypts is expected to begin fairly soon. He said the crypts are preplaced below grade, which means when the time comes for use, only minimal ground and soil disturbance is required.

Richmond said the work accomplished by the grant will increase the cemetery’s capacity for traditional full size burials.
