AUGUSTA (AP) — The son of a Maine cartoonist says he wasn’t offended when Republican Gov. Paul LePage joked that he’d like to shoot the boy’s father last month.
The Sun Journal reports Gov. LePage issued a handwritten apology to Nick Danby, the son of Bangor Daily News cartoonist George Danby, for making the remarks when asked by Nick Danby what he thought of his father.
Nick Danby wrote to the governor earlier this month, accepted his apology and said he was never offended.
The governor’s spokesman Peter Steele confirmed that LePage sent Nick a personal note, but said that copies of the note are not available.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
