ANDOVER (AP) — A Texas man was taken to a Maine hospital after suffering a broken ankle while hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The Maine Warden Service says it responded to a section of the trail in northwestern Maine at about noon Wednesday and took about four hours to remove 69-year-old Charles Smith, of Plano, Texas. He had left Andover earlier in the day and was hiking a section of the trail near the intersection of the Bemis Trail Track in Rangeley Plantation.
