Tonight’s Western Maine Class A softball championship game will feature a pair of familiar foes as Scaborough and Thornton Academy met in this exact spot last season.

In that contest, the Golden Trojans knocked off the Red Storm to advance to the state final. However, earlier this season, Scarborough took down TA ”“ so both teams will be looking for some revenge tonight.

Thornton coach John Provost is hoping his team’s experience from last season will pay dividends tonight.

“I think just having been there helps. Not knowing what to expect the last time and just having been there helps,” said Provost.

The Red Storm enter the regional finals with a perfect 18-0 record, which includes a close 4-3 win over TA in early May.

In Scarborough’s win over TA, the Red Storm got a four-hit, complete game from pitcher Lilly Volk and a home run and a RBI single from Chloe Gorey.

One of the hits Volk gave up was a two-run blast from TA standout Libby Pomerleau. Also leading the Trojans in the loss was Bailey Tremblay, who went 2-for-3 at the plate and also tossed a complete game with three strikeouts.

Provost believes that loss could provide an extra spark for his team.

“I think any loss provides motivation. Having lost to them earlier in the year and having lost to them in Florida, they are plenty motivated,” said Provost.

In the regular-season clash, Thornton fell behind by a 3-1 score early before tying the game with Pomerleau’s homer and then giving up a late run.

“It’s just kind of the way we’ve been playing all year,” said Provost of the earlier loss to Scarborough.

That loss didn’t hurt the Trojans’ faith in themselves.

“We’ve been playing from behind all year and have been pretty successful coming back in most cases. The girls have confidence and they don’t quit,” said Provost.

Tonight’s contest will likely be similar to the regular-season matchup and Provost knows his team will need to cut down on mistakes to get the win.

“I think for us it’s just going to be solid defense,” said Provost on the keys to tonight’s game.

Provost has plenty of confidence in his team’s ace, Tremblay, who will once again be in the circle against the Red Storm.

“Bailey has been consistent all year. She keeps us in games and she keeps batters off balance and, again, for us the key is playing good defense behind her,” said Provost.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish.
