The Kennebunk girls lacrosse team will have redemption on its mind when it plays in the Western Maine Class B regional final Wednesday.

The second-seeded Rams will be facing the only team to beat them during an 11-1 regular season record ”“ top-seeded Falmouth ”“ and will be looking to seal the deal in the regional title game after losing in the state championship qualifier the previous two years.

Kennebunk was cruising along during the first nine games of the regular season, going undefeated while knocking off the eventual top seeds in both Eastern (Messalonskee) and Western Class A (Massabesic), along with Class B playoff participants Waynflete, Yarmouth, Cape Elizabeth and York.

Then 7-1 Falmouth traveled to Kennebunk on May 26 and knocked Kennebunk from the list of unbeaten with a 10-8 victory.

“I don’t think anything went wrong for us,” Kennebunk head coach Annie Barker said of the loss to the Yachtsmen. “They just got two more goals than we did that day. We hit the post a bunch of times.”

Barker also said that her players had “a lot on their plates” outside of lacrosse heading into the game.

Kennebunk has since rebounded from that loss with a confidence-boosting win over North Yarmouth Academy, back-to-back wins over Greely (in the regular-season finale and postseason opener), and finally a semifinal victory over York to put the Rams into the regional final for the third year in a row.

“I just think we’re still going with that we’re all playing it together, we’re going to do this all together, and it’s going to take all of us to get it done,” Barker said of what has been the key to her team’s success. “That’s been our motto from day one, and I think the kids just know that everybody is as equal as anybody else on this team.”

The Rams are far from a one-man band, with proof coming from the semifinal victory over York, when seven different Kennebunk players scored during a 13-10 win.

“If we can keep that going, that will take us all the way,” Barker said of her team’s varied attack. “You can’t just take one person out ”¦ because somebody else can go to the cage. I think we’re very well-rounded.”

Jenny Bush and Olivia Sanford led the Rams’ attack in that game, but Kyra Schwartzman, Carly Sandler, Gabby Fogg, Hallie Schwartzman and Katy Ross also tallied goals.

Barker said her team is just as versatile on the other side of the field, as a defense that had to be rebuilt heading into this season has become “very strong” and has depth off the bench. That defense has a solid foundation in veteran goalie Bella Kudas.

When Kennebunk faces off with Falmouth in the rematch Wednesday, the defense will have to keep its eyes open for Yachtsmen senior attacker Leigh Bernardy and sophomore midfielder Sydney Bell, who Barker called Falmouth’s most dangerous offensive players.

Bell scored a team-high three goals in Falmouth’s semifinal victory over Waynflete, while Bernardy added two. The pair has paced the Yachtsmen attack all season.

Beyond the duo, Barker called Falmouth “a very solid lacrosse team.” She said her team will need to play smart, control possession and take good shots if the Rams are to get that revenge against the Yachtsmen.

There was little margin for error when the two teams met in May. Kennebunk has flirted with that small margin in its last two playoff exits as well, losing 8-7 to Cape Elizabeth in last year’s Western Class B title game and 7-6 to Massabesic in 2013, when Kennebunk was playing in Class A.

Needless to say, the Rams are ready to take the next step this time around. That next step means a victory in Falmouth Wednesday.

“I think they’re ready. They don’t want to see it end at all,” said Barker.
