LEWISTON — Lewiston police say several workers are going to be decontaminated after an envelope containing white powder was opened at a state office.
Police say white powder spilled from an envelope Monday morning, prompting the evacuation of the Maine Judicial Branch Violation Bureau and a response by a hazardous materials team.
The office receives all of the mail statewide for people paying civil and traffic fines.
The 20 or so workers were evacuated and the powder was being tested.
Park Street was closed and a portable decontamination tent was set up. Police say the decontamination process will take several hours.
