BIDDEFORD — Rumford police have arrested the man who allegedly stole about $400 worth of art from the North Dam Mill earlier this month, Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter confirmed this morning.

Jachin Caron, 25, was arrested at about 9 p.m. Monday at 139 Franklin St. in Rumford on a Biddeford District Court warrant and charged with theft, said Carter.

He was then transported to the Oxford County Jail, where his bail was set at $100 cash, according to a jail official.

The Biddeford Police Department thanked the general public for its assistance in identifying Caron in a post this morning on the department’s Facebook page. “Working together, we can make our community a safer place to live,” the post states.

“We had some concerned citizens in Rumford who recognized him and called our local police department last Friday and Saturday,” Rumford Police Sgt. Tracey Higley said this morning. RPD was then able to locate Caron and arrest him, he said.

Biddeford police first notified citizens of Caron’s identity by way of a Facebook post last Friday, also writing in that post: “This case serves as a great example of how community involvement works in assisting law enforcement to apprehend offenders.”

On March 19, Caron was caught on security footage removing four canvas prints from a hallway in the North Dam Mill, at 2 Main St. in Biddeford. The prints belong to the Heartwood College of Art, and were made by some of the school’s graduate students, Berri Kramer, the college’s president, told the Journal on March 23. She also said they were valued at $400-500.

Immediately following the incident, the mill’s Chief Information Officer Scott Thibeau expressed no doubt that Caron would eventually be caught.

“It happened right in the middle of the afternoon,” Thibeau said in a March 23 interview. “The perpetrator was pretty (gutsy). We’ll catch him though. It just takes some time.”
