BIDDEFORD — A Biddeford man indicted for manslaughter last month has been charged with robbery in relation to a separate incident, according to a statement from the York County Sheriff’s Office.

On Jan. 23, police charged Shane R. Jones, of Biddeford, with the Class A crime in connection to an armed robbery that took place in the fall.

The charge will be tacked onto the list of three charges Jones is facing in connection to a later incident, which includes manslaughter, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of an accident. On Feb. 3, a York County grand jury indicted Jones on those three charges, and on Feb. 12, he pleaded not guilty to all of them.

In the statement, which was emailed to the Journal on Wednesday, Sheriff Bill King said forensic analysis of evidence recovered from the crime scene implicated Jones in the robbery. Later, in an interview with Detective Mathieu Nadeau, Jones confessed to the crime, said King.

Jones allegedly entered the Big Apple convenience store, at 1120 Portland Road in Arundel, at about 9 p.m. on Nov. 7, wearing a mask and brandishing a firearm. King said he demanded cash from the register, so the clerk, who was alone at the time, emptied the drawer, and Jones fled with the money on foot, heading toward Limerick Road.

Then, just over two weeks after the robbery, police say Jones ran over his mother, Kimberly Jones, while backing out of the driveway of 6 Brackett St., where the two lived. The 49-year-old woman died from her injuries shortly after she was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

According to witness statements included in Biddeford Police Officer Scott R. LaBrecque’s affidavit, the accident occurred following an argument Jones and his mother had over money he owed her.

After the argument, which also involved Jones’ girlfriend, Krista Randall, the two allegedly got into Jones’ Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck; as it peeled out of the driveway, the passenger door, which was hanging open, struck Kimberly Jones. She fell to the ground, where she was then run over by the truck, according to witness statements.

Police say Jones, who was driving, then fled the scene, heading west toward the intersection of Brackett and Graham streets.

The defendant’s sister and victim’s daughter, Shawna Jones, who said she saw the accident, later told police she didn’t believe her brother had been drinking but suggested he was a drug user. She added that he had been feeling particularly stressed out at the time over financial problems.

Following an investigation into the accident, Jones was arrested on Nov. 28 and brought to the York County Jail in Alfred. He’s currently being held there on $50,000 cash bail for the initial three charges.

In the past, Jones has been convicted on charges of assault, theft and domestic violence, according to The Associated Press.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance for the robbery charge on April 7. Both robbery and manslaughter are Class A crimes, which are punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
