SANFORD — Roland Denby, 97, of Waterboro, passed away New Year’s Eve at his home.

He was born in Sanford on March 19, 1917, a son of the late William and Bessie (Gillis) Denby. Roland retired from the U. S. Army as a Lt. Colonel.

In his long army career he survived the D-Day invasion and was stationed in Okinawa, Taiwan, Turkey and South Korea.

After retiring to Waterboro, Roland became active in the community. He served on the Planning Board for Waterboro and the Saco River Commission. He was a member of the American Legion, the Mason’s and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program.

He is survived by: his granddaughter, Amy Gates; and his great grandson, Maxwell Gates.

Visiting hours will be on Saturday, Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. There will be a reception after from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Coastal House on Route 1 in Wells. Burial with military honors will be in the spring at the Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.
