Sanford Fire Department, Sanford-Springvale Call Firefighters Association and Local 1624 International Association of Fire Fighters gathered outside of Hannaford, Shaw’s, Save-a-Lot and Walmart stores on a recent weekend to collect food and money donations for the Sanford Food Pantry. Chairman of the food drive, L. Scott Lizotte, said 12 pickup truckloads of food and $8,500 were collected toward the effort through donations from the public over the course of the two days. A check presentation took place later at Sanford Central Station in which Lizotte presented the volunteers from the Sanford Food Pantry a check for the money and gift cards collected. Fire Chief Steve Benotti said he is proud of the members of his department in their efforts to give back to the community and help those in the city from going without this winter season.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
