Chiefs’ Berry diagnosed with lymphoma
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs safety Eric Berry has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and will begin chemotherapy for what doctors called a “very treatable and potentially curable” form of cancer.
Berry had been undergoing tests at Emory University in Atlanta since an MRI exam nearly two weeks ago showed a mass on the right side of his chest. At the time, doctors were still uncertain whether the mass was cancerous, but further testing revealed the lymphoma.
Dr. Christopher Flowers, who directs the lymphoma program at Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute, said Berry will undergo “standard chemotherapy approaches” to treat the disease. Flowers did not provide a timetable or prognosis for recovery.
Bears’ Marshall placed on injured reserve
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears star receiver Brandon Marshall was placed on injured reserve because of rib and lung injuries and will miss the rest of the season.
Marshall broke two ribs and hurt his lung in Thursday’s 41-28 loss to Dallas. The five-time Pro Bowl receiver was hit in the right side by the knee of Dallas defensive back Barry Church after making a catch and was taken from the stadium in an ambulance.
Marshall is out of the hospital, but he won’t be suiting up again this season.
RP Robertson signs with White Sox
SAN DIEGO (AP) — David Robertson is leaving the New York Yankees after one season as closer, agreeing to a $46 million, four-year contract with the Chicago White Sox, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced.
A right-hander who turns 30 in April, Robertson had spent his seven-year big league career with the Yankees. He took over from Mariano Rivera as New York’s closer last season and saved 39 games in 44 chances.
D-Backs sign Cuban Tomas
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas and the Arizona Diamondbacks have finalized a $68.5 million, six-year contract.
Arizona said the deal was signed Sunday in the Dominican Republic.
Tomas, 24, hit .375 (6 for 16) for Cuba with two homers and five RBIs in last year’s World Baseball Classic. The Diamondbacks may shift him to third base.
