WATERBORO — Firefighters from six communities battled frigid temperatures and hose lines that were starting to freeze as they fought to extinguish a blaze at a three-story home on Goodwin’s Mills Road overnight.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation ”“ firefighters were to return to the scene this morning ”“ but Fire Chief Matt Bors said it appears the fire may be traced to a clothes dryer.
No one was injured. Bors this morning said owner David Buck and his family were out of the home when firefighters arrived shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday.
The house is located 1573 Goodwin’s Mills Road, at the intersection with Holmes Road. The location is about three-tenths of mile from the Route 202 intersection.
Bors said firefighters sounded a third alarm to bring in manpower.
He said the cold temperatures descended quickly.
“Collectively, we had about 40 firefighters working. Crews struggled with cold temperatures and hose lines beginning to freeze with temperatures well below freezing,” he said.
The Buck family is being assisted by the American Red Cross of Southern Maine.
Assisting Waterboro firefighters were Alfred, Hollis, Goodwin’s Mills, Limerick and Buxton fire departments along with Ross Corner Fire Company.
Firefighters were able to leave the scene shortly after 3 a.m.
