ELLSWORTH — After a nearly three-hour bus ride to the game, the Kennebunk volleyball team got off to a slow start in its Class A state volleyball preliminary round game against Ellsworth on Thursday. The Rams dropped the first two sets before winning the third, but that’s as far as the rally got in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Eagles.
The eighth-seeded Eagles opened the match with seven-consecutive points en route to a 25-15 win in the first set.
Kennebunk fell behind again in the second set but rallied to take a 13-12 lead. The lead was short-lived for the Rams, however, as Ellsworth claimed the next four points and took the set, 25-17.
Kennebunk didn’t let another lead midway through the third set slip away, as the Rams held on for a 25-22 set win.
The Rams fell behind midway through the fourth set, and a final rally fell short as the Eagles won the set ”“ 25-20 ”“ and the match on a block at the net by Delaney Sargent.
Sarah Shelton led the Eagles with 19 kills in the victory.
Kennebunk ends its season with a 5-10 record.
