GORHAM — University of Southern Maine sophomore infielder/relief pitcher Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) was among the honorees when the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced its 2017 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-America teams Thursday evening at the opening ceremonies for the NCAA Division III College World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Dexter was named the Division III All-America second team at the utility player position. He is the 29th USM player to receive ABCA All-America honors since 1982.

The second-year player had a standout season as the Huskies’ starting second baseman and closer. At the plate, he hit .356 (64 for 180) with 36 runs scored, six doubles, one home run and 25 RBI. The slick-fielding Dexter made just nine errors in the field to finish with a .951 fielding percentage.

Dexter made 26 appearances, all in relief, compiling a 4-2 record with a school single-season record 12 saves and a 2.66 ERA. The right-hander worked 40 2/3 innings allowing just 34 hits and eight walks while striking out 34 and holding opponents to a .227 batting average.
