Maddy, a 6-month-old kitten, was the guest of honor Saturday at The Pier’s Chili Fest in Old Orchard Beach. The event, which featured chili from area restaurants, raised money for the Old Orchard Beach Community Animal Watch Committee. Maddy was taken in by a volunteer at about 4-to-6 weeks old. Someone had called the committee and found Maddy and a sibling, Bones, who was in poor health and has since died, orphaned after the mother died. Maddy had two polyps removed and funds were raised during the chili fest to cover the expense of further surgeries she will need. To make a donation or volunteer with the Community Animal Watch Committee, call Beverly Russell at 602-8845.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
