AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage says it’s too bad that the National Football League “waited so long to do the right thing” and indefinitely suspend a player for domestic violence.
The Lewiston Sun Journal reports that the Republican governor criticized the NFL for indefinitely suspending Ray Rice only after a video was released Monday showing the running back striking his then-fiancee.
A video previously released showed Rice removing her motionless body from an elevator. LePage said that should’ve been “more than enough evidence” for the NFL to suspend Rice and the Ravens to cut him.
LePage, who was beaten as a child, has made fighting domestic violence a priority. He wrote a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell last month criticizing the two-game suspension originally given to Rice.
