A silent auction and tag sale will take place as part of the Shaker Hill Apple Festival in Alfred on Sept. 13 and 14. The festival is a major fundraiser to benefit the hungry and the homeless in neayby neighborhoods. The York County Shelter Programs is seeking items to offer for sale for both events.
All kinds of items are welcome except large appliances, TV sets, clothing, and chipped or damaged items. Antiques and works of art are welcome. Items may be brought to the YCSPI in Alfred. To arrange for pick-up of items before Sept. 11, contact Joan Sylvester, community relations, at 324-1137, ext. 105, or [email protected].

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
