SCARBOROUGH — Barbara McGee Chasse, 92, of Scarborough, passed away at home, surrounded by her family, on Aug. 7.

She was born to John L. and Lillian (Taylor) McGee in Lewiston on Dec. 7, 1921.

Her early years were spent in Lewiston, and she graduated from Bates College in 1942.

In 1943, she married Alfred Chasse and moved to Sanford, where they raised their family.

Barbara was preceded in death by: her husband, Alfred, in 1956; her sister, Lorraine Roberts of Rhode Island; and her brother, John L. McGee Jr. of Massachusetts.

She is survived by: her children, Karen Hopkins of Oregon, Richard and Ellen (Richards) Chasse of Kennebunk and Susan Stilphen of Saco.

She was the proud grandmother of Benjamin Hopkins and Samuel Hopkins, both of California, Sarah Chasse of Massachusetts, Andrew Chasse of Kennebunk, and Jesse Stilphen of Saco; and great-grandmother of eight.

Barbara taught English in Sanford for more than 30 years. While teaching full time, she earned a master’s degree in education from the University of New Hampshire over several summers. After retirement, she continued to volunteer in classrooms at Burns School in Saco and Blue Point Elementary School in Scarborough into her 90s, helping children with reading.

Barbara enjoyed playing the piano, and over the years, she entertained many people with her music. For years, she played every Friday at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

Her family thanks Hospice of Southern Maine for helping her spend her last weeks in her home.

At Barbara’s request, no services will be held. Her family will hold a celebration of life at a later date. Barbara donated her body to the medical school at The University of New England, and so is still involved in teaching.
