Pictured is a UNE student trying on firefighting equipment. The University of New England welcomed members of the City of Biddeford Fire Department to campus Aug. 19 for a training session that allowed resident assistants for the upcoming academic year to practice proper fire safety protocols.
The event was coordinated by the UNE Office of Safety and Security and the Office of Student Affairs. Using nontoxic smoke, the firefighters turned Padua Residence Hall into a “smokehouse” so that students could practice evacuating a dorm under smoky conditions. Students also had the chance to try on some of the firefighters’ equipment and to tour the inside of a fire truck. (SUBMITTED PHOTO)

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
