SANFORD — The 2017 coaching staff is expected to see a pair of familiar faces this season. Returning for their second year is both head coach Chris Morris and pitching coach Tim Corey. Making his NECBL coaching debut is first-year Mainer hitting coach Nick Swim.

Swim, the lone newcomer, brings an outstanding resume to the club. As a first year coach at Bridgton, Swim was the Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year at BFA St. Albans in 2011. He took a post-graduate year at Bridgton Academy before attending the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2013. After batting .230 his freshman year and suffering an injury in 2014, Swim transferred to Castleton, where he was in complete control at the plate. With a .407 batting average in his last two collegiate years, Swim had 132 hits, 32 doubles, 74 RBI, and five homeruns. Although Swim’s collegiate numbers certainly qualify his position as hitting coach, he expressed his excitement for being a part of the summer club, saying that he wants nothing other than to help the incoming players improve.

“I’m really excited to be in the NECBL,” Swim said. “Especially in Sanford because of its reputation for hosting some of the best baseball in the country.”

A 2015 graduate of Colby College, Tim Corey looks to help the pitching and catching core for the Mainers in his second season. Corey took the assistant coaching position for his alma mater in 2016, and is currently his second year with the Mules. A biology-neuroscience major at Colby, the Framingham, Massachusetts native captained his senior year and was selected as a New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.

Rounding out the coaching staff and returning for his second season is current Massachusetts Institute of Technology assistant coach Chris Morris. Morris took over the Mainers last season, leading the Moose to a Northern Division title and an NECBL Championship appearance, all while taking home the Joel Cooney Manager of the Year Award. After all of that, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to come back.

“I am really excited to be in Sanford for another summer, as the town truly has become a home away from home for me,” he said. “Sanford is a very special place to me, and the way the city embraces the Mainers is unlike anything I’ve seen anywhere else.”

A 2010 graduate of Husson University, Morris spent his time prior to MIT as an assistant coach for both the Husson baseball and football teams. As he played both sports at his alma mater, Morris also spent time with the Mainers as a pitching coach in 2015. The second year skipper mentioned that a lot of the team’s success in 2016 came from returning coach Tim Corey, and that he’s excited to be back with the Mainer front office.

“Aaron Izaryk and John Webb are both great people that really help make each summer so special,” he said. “Our entire organization does a tremendous job with our day-to-day operations of running a successful summer baseball program and it makes the experience for each player and coach even more positive.”
