AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King are planning to travel to Texas to visit sites housing immigrant children who have crossed the border illegally.
King, an independent, said Wednesday that they will join 10 other members of the U.S. House and Senate on a trip to the southern border later this week, pending the Senate’s work schedule. The trip is being organized by Collins, a Republican, and Steny Hoyer, the House Democratic Whip from Maryland.
The group plans to visit the U.S. Border Patrol’s McAllen Station in South Texas and the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. King’s office says that tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors from Central American who crossed the border are living there.
