BIDDEFORD — Sr. Gertrude Champoux, formerly known as Sr. St. Fernand of Jesus, died at St. Joseph Convent in Biddeford at the age of 90 on Saturday, May 24, 2014.

Sr. Gertrude was born in Biddeford on Jan. 17, 1924, to Wilfrid Champoux and Georgiana Roy Champoux. Sr. Gertrude was the second child in a family of five children. She received her education at St. Joseph Elementary School and St. Joseph High School in Biddeford.

On Aug. 25, 1942, Sr. Gertrude entered the Congregation of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, in Biddeford. After her initial training in religious life, she spent one year studying at the Mother House in Quebec. From this assignment, she taught elementary school in Van Buren. She then began her studies at Mercy Hospital in Portland, where she graduated and became a registered nurse. She worked at St. Andre Maternity Hospital and Group Home in Biddeford. Following this, she became the nursing supervisor of the Sisters’ Infirmary at Bay View and at St. Andre Home. She later continued to serve the sisters as a nurse in caring for their minor podiatry needs. After many years, she retired from this service while continuing to reside at St. Joseph Convent.

Sister is survived by: one brother, Leo Champoux, who resides in Glen, N.H.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be at St. Joseph Convent, 409 Pool St., Biddeford, on Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Joseph Convent, 409 Pool St., Biddeford, on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Biddeford.
