NEWFIELD — An 18-month-old boy appeared unharmed, but his father was taken to Sanford Medical Center Wednesday after the SUV the man was driving slammed into a house at 341 Bridge St.
York County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. David Chauvette said an initial investigation indicates the driver, 33-year-old Michael Fellows of Newfield, had some sort of medical issue and blacked out. He was headed south on Bridge Street when his SUV crossed the center line and then over the lawn, hitting the house, owned by Harriet Gerry, just around noon.
The child was secured in a child safety seat in the back seat and was not taken to the hospital, but was released to a family member until his mother arrived.
A neighbor, who declined to give his name, said he’d just finished watering Gerry’s flowers and went inside the house to speak to her when the mishap took place.
“I just made it inside, and (heard a) bang! I saw the wall come in,” the man said. “I thought it was a meteor.”
Then, he looked outside and saw the SUV. The impact punched a hole through the wall of the home. No one inside was injured.
Fire and rescue personnel from the Newfield and Limerick departments responded.
