OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Recreation Department will start the pickleball season on Thursday, May 22 with a free kickoff event from 4-7 p.m.
The recreation department will provide free food and lessons to all those looking to play and learn more about pickleball.
Pickleball is played on a 20-by-44-foot court, with a net that is 34 inches high. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a Wiffle Ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, and can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
The regular season for pickleball will begin Thursday, May 29 and continue through the spring and summer. The drop in fee is $2, and all matches are played at the Loranger Middle School tennis courts from 4-7 p.m. There will be multiple courts available for use.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
