SACO — Christopher P. Angis, 63, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, from a heart attack.
Chris was born April 7, 1955, at the Webber Hospital in Biddeford. He was the son of John and Elaine (Whelan) Angis. His father introduced him to the game of golf at a young age, and little did Chris know then that golf would become his life. He spent countless hours practicing and playing throughout his school years, and he continued after graduating from Thornton Academy in 1973.
In 1986, Chris was inducted into the Professional Golfers’ Association as a Class A Member. After stints working in Florida and Massachusetts, Chris returned home to Maine in 1991, where he worked at Falmouth Country Club, Boothbay Harbor Country Club, and Biddeford Saco Country Club. Chris had his share of highlights as a player, including winning the Maine Senior Open in 2007, but his greatest joy was instructing. He especially loved teaching young golfers and nurturing their passion for the game.
In 2017, he became the golf pro at the Abenakee Club in Biddeford Pool, where he planned to finish his career working the summer months in a place he loved and doing what he always dreamed of doing, working and teaching as a golf professional.
Chris was predeceased by his parents, his brother John, and his sister Laura Wolfahrt. He is survived by his brothers, William and Timothy, and sister Jane Kerry. His role as “Uncle Chris” was taken with tremendous pride and joy — there was not a child he would meet and not immediately try to engage. He will be especially missed by his nephews and niece; Jeffrey Wolfahrt; Neil, Eric, and Brian Angis; Megan Angis; and Seamus Kerry. Chris will be remembered by his many family members, friends, and colleagues for the genuine, fun-loving, and quietly caring person that he was.
Visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St., Saco, with a memorial service at 1 p,m. A burial service will follow.
Donations may be made in Chris’s memory to the Maine State Golf Association Junior Program, Attn: Randy Hodsdon, at 58 Val Halla Road, Cumberland Center, Maine 04021; or to Mary’s Walk, P.O. Box 746, Saco, Maine 04072.
