Take a Kid Mountain Biking debuts Saturday morning
The inaugural Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at McDougal Orchards cycling trails, 201 Hanson Ridge Road. Bike apparel raffles and free snacks sponsored by Clif Bar will be available.
Trips for Kids: Nasson Community Center has a limited supply of bicycles and helmets for use at the event.

AWS again offering Humane Action League
The Animal Welfare Society’s popular after-school group, Humane Action League, will begin its fall session on Monday.
The group is for students interested in animals and who want to be involved in animal welfare. Each week, the club learns about a different topic ranging from humane animal care to the crisis threatening arctic animals.
The group is open to children ages 7 to 12 years old. Students will meet after school every Monday through Jan. 30 at the shelter, Old Holland Road.
The cost is $60 for the semester. Registration is limited to 10 children per semester.

Authors’ talk to focus on 10 years of Afghanistan war
Elizabeth Gould and Paul Fitzgerald, authors of “Crossing Zero: the AfPak War at the Turning Point of American Empire,” will give a talk from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Bowdoin College’s Smith Auditorium, Sills Hall.
The talk will center around the “Ten Years of War in Afghanistan.”
The panelists include: Allen Wells, a history professor; and Nat Wheelwright, a biology professor.
