ARUNDEL — One woman was injured in a single-vehicle car crash on Route 1 Monday morning.
Later in the day ”“ at about 2 p.m. ”“ while utility crews were replacing downed poles associated with the 9:30 a.m. crash, a second vehicle mishap resulted in no injuries but a trip to jail for one of the passengers who was wanted on several warrants.
A third crash, at about 4:15 p.m., resulted in injuries to one of the drivers involved in the two-vehicle crash.
A portion of Route 1, from Old Post Road south to Log Cabin Road, was closed for much of the day.
In the first crash, deputies were notified via the On Star system that a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Shirley Sargent, 67, of Kennebunk, struck a utility pole, causing it to snap in half. The broken pole meant wires were strewn across the roadway and on top of the Trailblazer, said York County Chief Deputy Bill King.
Arundel Fire and Rescue and Biddeford Fire Department were dispatched. King said the utility pole was dangling, suspended in the middle of the road, and the Arundel rescue unit could not get to the victim to transport her to Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford, so their Biddeford counterparts made the trip. He said the patient was conscious but suffering from hip pain.
Falling utility wires also damaged another vehicle, a 2008 Ford Focus, driven by Shirley Danforth, 56, also of Kennebunk. She was not injured.
The downed power lines caused many area residents to lose power, and Portland Road ”“ Route 1”“ was blocked off until around 4:15 p.m.
King said Deputy Duane Fay was notified at about 2 p.m. that there was a minor crash on the Biddeford side of the first mishap, near the intersection of Portland Road and Old Post Road.
“After responding, Deputy Fay determined that the crash was not reportable but found a passenger in one of the involved vehicles was wanted on several outstanding warrants,” King said in a prepared statement.
Jesse Hernandez, 25, of Biddeford, was arrested on three warrants for allegedly failing to appear to make restitution on a previous charge, failure to pay fines on a previous theft charge and on a burglary warrant from Oklahoma ”“ though authorities there have determined Hernandez won’t be extradited on the charge. Hernandez was taken to York County Jail in Alfred, where he was held on $516 bail.
A couple of hours later, Jonah Fertig, 25, of Portland, was driving a 1996 VW Passat that struck a 2002 Chrysler 300 driven by Kathryn Dutton, 52, of Old Orchard Beach. Dutton was alone in her vehicle, while Fertig was accompanied by a 9-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy. Nobody in Fertig’s vehicle was injured. Dutton was taken to Biddeford Medical Center for neck pain, King said. Both vehicles had minimal damage.
