GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Nurses at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield have announced that they plan a one-day strike for next month.

The strike announcement Wednesday comes days after hospital management declared an impasse in the 28-month contract negotiations and said it would begin immediately implementing changes.

The 24-hour strike is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Feb. 10.

Union leader Donna Stern says hospital officials left the nurses with “little recourse.”

Hospital president Chuck Gijanto said the strike announcement was disappointing but not surprising. He says the hospital will continue to implement charges, including calculating overtime on a weekly basis rather than a daily basis. That change has been a key sticking point in contract negotiations. He says the hospital has a plan in place for the strike.
