WELLS — Wells police were led on a chase through three towns Sunday night that ended in the arrest of a New York man, according to a statement from Wells Police Department.
At about 9:35 p.m. Sunday, police received a complaint of an erratic driver on Route 1, near Mike’s Clam Shack. Police responded, and the driver of the vehicle, 50-year-old Robert Sherwood, of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., refused to stop. He drove into Kennebunk and then back into Wells.
Sherwood drove over a Spikemat and continued on, refusing to stop for officers. He drove over a second Spikemat and lost three tires, driving on the rims of the vehicle. He continued south on Route 1 into Ogunquit, driving more than 18 miles before losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a snow bank while making a right-hand turn at Cherry Lane in Ogunquit.
After struggling with officers, he was taken into custody at 10:30 p.m. He was charged with passing a roadblock and was unable to post bail. He was transported to York County Jail in Alfred. The charges of operating under the influence, operating without a license, violating conditions of release and refusing to submit to arrest or detention will be requested for consideration by a grand jury.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
