WELLS — The Wells volleyball team grinded out a 3-1 win over visiting York Thursday evening.
The Warriors won the first set 25-12, dropped the second set 25-19, then won the ensuing two 25-22 and 25-14.
Wells coach Ryan Fairchild was proud of his team’s effort against an opponent with a similar resume.
“I expected a five-setter or something similar. In the beginning we adjusted to them, they adjusted to us,” said Fairchild. “We’ve played a lot of teams that are close to us so I’m proud of them doing what they’re doing.”
The Warriors jumped out to a quick 10-7 lead in the first, then scored seven consecutive points to put the first set out of reach for York.
The Wildcats battled back in the second though, and took an 11-6 lead thanks to four aces from York’s Abby Orso and eventually closed out the second set.
“I just told them to play their game, stay low, play good defense and to keep doing what they were doing. If you have good passes and good communication then you’re going to come out with a positive result,” said Fairchild.
The Warriors did just that, winning a tight 25-22 decision in the third set then cruising to an 18-4 lead and eventual win in the fourth to secure the match.
Wells was led by Kait Schott, who racked up two aces, 27 assists and three digs. Alyssa Loukola also had a solid outing, totaling two aces, seven kills and three blocks.
Also getting in the mix was Halee Ramsdell with three aces, four kills and two digs. Olivia Brousseau also tallied three aces, an assist and a dig.
Fairchild hopes his team continues to battle as the playoff push approaches, and believes that Thursday’s win is a good start.
“It’s huge – you’re better off putting your destiny in your own hands instead of someone else’s. They need to keep doing what they’re doing … we have Portland and Cony next so hopefully we can get those wins and have things fall in place for us.”
