BIDDEFORD — Bail has been set at $10,000 cash for a Biddeford man suspected of stabbing another man at a South Street residence Thursday night.

Stephen Cote, 32, of Biddeford, pleaded not guilty to charges of Class B aggravated assault in his arraignment by video in Springvale District Court on Friday.

Police say Cote stabbed a 41-year-old man, who is not being identified, at a residence at 174 South St. around 10 p.m. Thursday.

According to police, the victim suffered a significant laceration to his hand. Police said he was uncooperative and had to be placed in protective custody in order to receive treatment by emergency personnel. He was then transported to Southern Maine Health Care.

Cote was charged and taken to York County Jail in Alfred, where he remained Friday afternoon. A second court date has not been set.

If convicted, Cote could face up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000.

Police also arrested Katherine Smith, 32, of Biddeford, at the scene. According to police, Smith was intoxicated and became disorderly and uncooperative, and argued with officers. She was charged with obstructing government administration, a Class D crime.

Smith was also taken to YCJ, but was released on personal recognizance Friday.

Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk declined to comment on details surrounding the incident, saying those involved have been uncooperative and police are still investigating.

“It’s still an open investigation … I wouldn’t want to expand on that,” Fisk said.
