OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Surge (15-11) took an early lead in the second inning and never looked back as they went on to beat the visiting Sullivan Explorers (13-13) by a final score of 9-1 on Wednesday night at The Ballpark.

The Surge took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Right fielder Bryan White knocked in an RBI single. A bases-loaded balk would score catcher Jordyn Van Atta. Second baseman Shaun Cooper would collect an RBI on a sac fly.

The Surge would add to their lead in the third, picking up two more runs. Van Atta would knock an RBI single. White would pick up his second RBI of the game on a fielder’s choice.

The Surge would continue adding to their lead, going ahead 6-0 in the fourth off an RBI single from first baseman Chris Allen. A two-run single from designated hitter Sean Washington in the sixth would put the Surge ahead 8-0.

Left-handed pitcher Cody Frank would take over the mound in relief of starter Benny Collesano. Collesano would toss for seven complete innings, allowing no runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out two to pick up his second win of the season.

The Surge would pick up another run in the eighth. Center fielder Jacob Fabry would reach on a walk, making his way around the bases and eventually scoring on multiple wild pitches.

Left-handed pitcher Eric Kline would take over in the ninth to close out the game. Kline and Frank would combine for no hits, one run, one walk and one strikeout over two innings of relief.

The Surge outhit the Explorers 9-4, with second baseman Shaun Cooper leading the team with three, including two doubles. The Surge once again showed off their speed, picking up seven stolen bases on the night. Chris Allen and Sean Washington each had three, with Allen picking up his league-leading 17th stolen base of the season.

The Surge return to action tonight at 6:30 p.m. for game 4 of their 5 game series with the Explorers. Newly acquired pitcher Michael Volpe will be making his debut on the mound.
