WESTBROOK (AP) — The hunt for a large snake seen feasting on a beaver has residents atwitter in Westbrook.

Police say the snake, at least 10 feet long, finished its meal early Wednesday before swimming across the Presumpscot River before disappearing into brush on the other side.

Residents were alarmed because kids swim and feed ducks in that section of river.

The snake was quickly dubbed “Wessie” and the “Presumpscot Python” by residents on social media. A Twitter hashtag was created and someone created a fake account for the snake.

Police were patrolling the riverbank on Wednesday but the snake was nowhere to be seen.

Maine Warden Service officials say the snake is expected to lay dormant for a couple days since it just consumed a large mammal.
