From the Journal Tribune: “La Kermesse, the annual celebration of Franco-American culture, brings residents out in droves for the parade, the fireworks, the food, the music. For local hidden talent, competitions like the La Kermesse Idol give everyday people the chance to prove their musical ability to friends and neighbors. For others, like local rock bands, it’s an opportunity to put the fruits of hours and hours of rehearsals on stage.”

50 years ago

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Robert Controy, manager of the local office of New England Tel. and Tel. Co. said today that about 48,000 local calls are handled each day and only about 300 calls are observed each month. Conroy said that the company will occasionally check to see that a customer properly reaches his calling party, but will immediately hang up once the proper connection is made.”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “The police of Portsmouth and Kittery were searching for the man or men who have twice within two weeks entered the residence of Haven Fernald at the Intervene Kittery and made away with good loot. Someone cut a piece of glass out of a dining room window. The intruder put his hands through the window and unfastened the latch. He took a revolver, a pocketbook, and a grand total of over $155.00.”
