“Without dew and light flowers fade. Charity and love are the dew and light of the human heart.” DeGentis

“How to greet each new day? Throw open the window and shout “hooray” Every day is a once in a lifetime day.” Anonymous

Finally! An ideal warm, sunny day in Maine.  It seem we waited long for this. Amidst the early morning dew I took a nature walk around my yard just looking at the splashes of bright reds, oranges and yellow.  What amazing beauty and color we see in the flowers that sprung up overnight. Like blazing torches they sway in the wind.  I looked, touched and sniffed the many fragrances of the flower patch as i  marveled at their appearance.

We are placed right in the middle of their beauty to enjoy and care for them. I wander around soaking in the tenderness of the early morning sunshine as it wraps its warmth around me.  While admiring the growth and beauty of the flowers I eavesdrop on the birds as they chirp and sing. Have you ever seen so many squirrels? They are all sizes doing acrobatics along the limbs of the trees.

Nature makes me feel deep and good about a beautiful world. Even we will grow and flourish like a plant in the right soil and right conditions. We are faced with mysteries we cannot explain. Emily Dickenson sees nature differently. Emily bitterly describes the sun as a “blonde assassin slaying a tender flower” for an “approving God.”

With the constant barrage of news in our media–saturated age we become addicted to hyper stimulation.  It is not hard to find someone in need of comfort. No matter how chaotic the world may become with noisy lives and cluttered minds we nurture and care coaxing beauty into places of brokenness and places of despair. People are driven by purpose, to feel that we matter, to feel that we are making a contribution.

There are many wonderful organizations in the Saco Bay Area. They have focus and a real commitment to reach their target. Since 1881, the Dyer Library has served the educational and cultural needs of our area. I have had a Dyer Library Saco Museum card (DLSM) since 1949.  The library and museum have expanded and grown becoming essential community resources.

The Saco Museum was founded as the York Institute in 1866. The museum boasts an exemplary collection of more than 12,000 objects. You will find museum exhibits, special events, and many wonderful programs at both places.

Speaking of plants, the Saco Bay Gardening Club is having their Annual Plant Sale Saturday, June 2, 2018, 9 a.m. until noon.  Location: Main Street, Saco, Maine, Dyer Library/Saco Museum Lawn. For sale will be perennials, herbs, vegetable seedlings, baskets, children’s table and more.
